FUN FACTS: This “Boho Buffa-mama” and her floral crown harks back to a long tradition. The flower crown’s history in mythology and art can be traced to ancient civilizations. They were common in ancient Greece where it was especially popular to wear them at special occasions to honor the gods. Worn for ceremonial reasons, they could illustrate status and accomplishment (like the laurel leaf wreath awarded to honor achievements and signify respect).
In agrarian societies, tied to the land and the seasons, flower crowns had great symbolic meaning. The language of flowers and herbs was well-known, with each carrying its own meaning. Full of significance, floral headdresses were woven into the social and dress traditions of places as distant as Russia and Hawaii.
Flower crowns (known as a vinok) are a part of the traditional folk dress in the Ukraine. During a Ukrainian wedding ceremony, wreaths made out of periwinkle and myrtle are placed on top of the couple’s heads after the vow exchange. Today, traditional Ukrainian flower crowns are often seen at festivals and special occasions, including weddings.
Like the white wedding gown, Queen Victoria also brought the flower crown into fashion in Victorian era England. She wore an orange blossom wreath in her hair for her wedding to Prince Albert in 1840.
The late 1960s are practically synonymous with hippie culture – and flower crowns became a boho accessory mainstay in the U.S. associated with peace and love, all ideals of the movement.
In our increasingly industrial and computerized world a flower crown has became a romantic sign of the simple country life and is appreciated for its beauty and simplicity. Beautiful to behold, these statement-making floral arrangements are a “Buffalovely” way to add romance to celebrations!
